Conventional wisdom says never to discuss politics or religion in polite or in business company. And while some may call this blog political, we choose to focus solely on the true American patriotism we have seen over the past week.
First, we have seen the patriotism of the U. S. Navy SEALs and other members of our Armed Services that risked their lives in Abbottabad, Pakistan, when attacking the Osama bin Laden compound. There was minimal intelligence about the compound, a huge Pakistani military base right next door, and dubious support, if not outright opposition by the Pakistani government. Despite overwhelming odds, those brave American Warriors, inserted into their designated area, settled an old score with bin Laden, secured actionable intelligence resources, and successfully extracted, without casualty, without fanfare.
Second, our government and military deserve commendation because generally these types of operations are leaked all over the press, both before and after, so some jerk can get his name in the paper. In this case, most of the administration and all of Congress were in the dark, so a real surprise attack could be successful. Usually, three men can keep a secret as long as two of them are dead.
Third, our country’s attack was on Osama bin Laden, not the entire Arab or Muslim world, and our President’s decision to bury bin Laden within 24 hours of death as is Muslim custom (even though at sea), sought to diffuse antagonism.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the outpouring of support by the American people is truly patriotic and noteworthy. Those of us who can remember the Vietnam War, and the antagonism by many towards OUR military in the 60’s and 70’s see a totally different picture today. OUR men and women in uniform, OUR Warriors, are real life, real time, flesh and blood heroes to be honored, respected, admired and most of all, THANKED. They next time you see an American Warrior in uniform, in an airport, a train station, bus station, or even a restaurant, move that Champion of OURS to the FRONT of the line. After all, what have they given up for you already?
While they have our backs, we give them our support, our prayers, and we are now and forever grateful beyond measure.
